Broken sprinklers

"Why do prices vary so much? I've gotten three quotes and they vary by thousands of dollars."

Yes, you will find that many times your sprinkler system installation estimates vary greatly. It is hard to understand why when they appear to be just about the same.
The reason is that an installation is like anything else. There are good and bad systems. All cars have four wheels and an engine but we know that some will provide better service and cost less over the long run than others. Chances are you are not driving a Yugo. You knew that to get what you wanted out of a car you had to spend more than what a Yugo would cost you. The same is true for sprinkler systems.

So what are the differences?

There are many differences between good and bad systems. Some may seem minor but all will affect the overall operation of the system and its ultimate cost to you.
The first question should be is the irrigator licensed. If he is, he has passed a difficult test requiring knowledge of all aspects of a sprinkler system. This doesn't quarantee a good job but if you have a problem you can go to a state agency with your complaint.
There are many ways to cut corners in the installation. So even if the design is good the irrigator may not install a quality system. Some of the things you need to look for are: Are the parts used commercial grade or bought at a mass merchandiser, is a PVB installed as required by law, is schedule 40 pipe installed to the PVB, is primer used with the sealant for a better seal, are a minimum of 4" pop up heads used, are pop up heads used in the front and back of beds or are "risers" used, is underground approved single strand wire used or easily broken multi-strand wire.
There are many more ways to cheapen a system, don't be fooled by a cheap price.
